The best robot vacuum is the Ecovacs Deebot T9+ Robot Vacuum and Mop, because it's great at picking up everything from pet hair to larger debris, is able to avoid pets, and operates quietly, too.

There’s pelo carpet sensing, so you need to tell it where carpets are if you don’t want it to mop them. You can even set the cleaning direction and build up to four maps — again, features usually only found on higher-end robots.

On the navigation front, we'll also test the robot vacuum's edge cleaning abilities – does it get right up to the edges of rooms, or leave a margin that needs manual cleaning.

“Freo” refers to the bot’s ability to make cleaning “decisions,” including going back to clean dirty floors.

Combined with its ability to swing slightly to get closer to baseboards, the Narwal does a very good job on hard floors. Its dual four-liter water tanks will keep you going longer than most other mopping bots as well, the majority of which feature smaller tanks.

It’s not perfect, since it can struggle with uneven flooring and bumps. Like many robot vacuums, its round shape does limit its ability to reach into corners. But, we’re still very pleased with it. In fact, over three months of testing, we didn’t even use our big vacuum once (and only pulled out the handheld vacuum for corners).

The Roborock S8 Pro Ultra aces nearly all of the cleaning tests we’ve thrown at it. It’s excellent at cleaning bare floors, picking up pet hair, and navigating through spaces. It’s also one of the few robotic vacuums to earn a top-notch score for cleaning carpets. This model works as a mopping system as well and is self-washing and self-drying, though we haven’t tested those features.

The Matic is a $1,095 robot vacuum that doesn’t need a cloud connection and uses cameras to navigate and is the first robovac mop I’ve seen that can suck up wet spills as well as dry. Here’s some video of it in action.

Navigation is excellent and this bot can also be relied upon to identify and avoid obstacles as required, meaning you can leave it to do its own thing without having to worry about it getting stuck or trying to suction up something it shouldn't. On test we also found it was great at hosting itself over tall thresholds.

The specs stood up on testing too; this robovac's vacuuming powers are some of the very best we've come across. Our tester also found it could tackle the edges of rooms remarkably well, and its mopping is excellent too.

It does create a lot of dirty water though, and is a little slow because it'll wash its mop pads multiple times per cleaning session. Elsewhere, it boasts an excellent app and the vacuuming is strong, too.

The Dirt Detect feature remembers the dirtiest rooms, and I found that meant it actively seeks out the spots my hairy Wirehaired Pointing Griffon hangs out. The 10 Max can also be set to mop only, which is a new option and is handy for deep cleans.

We see the ILife V3s Pro Robot Vacuum as an excellent starter robot vacuum, and an especially great choice if you (or someone you love) want to dip your toe into the robot vacuum world without having to download apps or navigate smart mapping features. The sleek and simplistic design makes it easy to use out of the box, and there’s pelo Top 3 Automatic Vacuum Cleaners app or voice control features that would make it “smart.”  We love that it has an obvious power switch and easy-to-use remote control—it takes just a couple minutes to set up.

There are pelo other X10 models in the Eufy range, so you can't choose, for example, a version without mopping or with a more basic dock. There is a more advanced option: the Eufy Omni S1 Pro which adds improved obstacle avoidance, automatic detergent dispensing, and swaps the spinning mop pads for a roller that's fed by a constant supply of fresh water. It's significantly more expensive, though.
